Bowling at the Polish National Home Circa 1961

Back in the day, there was bowling at the Polish National Home of Hartford.

Our basement had several lanes for play.

This is an article that mentions the “Polish National Home Lanes” back in 1961, with a picture of three bowlers.

A special thanks to Rob Poulin for sharing this historical news clipping with us!

Mount Everest and the Golden Age of Polish Mountaineering

The Polish National Home of Hartford is proud to announce “Mount Everest and the Golden Age of Polish Mountaineering”

by Mark Milewski

Sunday, October 28, 2018 at 1:00 PM

Polish National Home
60 Charter Oak Ave. • Hartford, CT 06106

Mark Milewski summited 29,029 ft. Mount Everest on May 20, 2016. He will share the story of his climb but also place Mount Everest into the context of the Golden Age of Polish Himalayan Climbing of the 1980s and 1990s.

Milewski’s parents, Stanislaw and Anita Milewski, immigrated to the United States from Poland via several countries in-between, part of the post-World War II diaspora. They emigrated from a country that holds a very proud place in the history of climbing in the Himalaya, the highest mountain range in the world.

In the last two decades of the twentieth century, Poles dominated the 8000-meter peaks located there with numerous winter and first ascents. Climbers such as Jerzy Kukuczka, Wanda Rutkiewicz, Krzysztof Wielicki, and many others, were respected internationally and celebrated within Poland for their feats.

Milewski will tell his story and their story; tales of adventure in high places that lift the human spirit yet a chapter of Polish history that is little known outside of international climbing circles.

Milewski is Associate Professor of Business Administration at Tunxis Community College in Farmington, CT and a member of the Polish National Home and of the advisory board to the Polish Studies Program at Central Connecticut State University.
